Taribo West backs embattled Calvin Bassey amid Ajax criticism

Former Nigeria defender, Taribo has praised Ajax and Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey despite criticism from Ajax fans and legends since joining the Dutch side.

Bassey joined Ajax from Scottish Premiership side, Glasgow Rangers last summer, and has scored a goal with three assists for Ajax in 18 league games this season.

During Ajax’s last league game against Waalwijk, the defender was benched by caretaker coach, Jonny Heitinga before coming off the bench to provide an assist in the Amsterdam side 3-1 comeback win.

Following his latest impact, Taribo has backed him to rediscover his form asserting that he remains a quality player.

“He has been criticized many times, but I will advise him to listen to his coach and play to instructions. I have watched him at the national team few times, he has the talent to do well,” Taribo told Brila FM.

“He doesn’t have to listen to the fans as they will always have their opinions, but he must work hard in training, stay committed and dedicated. He is a young and quality defender,” he concluded.
