Terem Moffi wins Uefa Europa Conference League goal of the season award

By Monsurah Olatunji

Terem Moffi has won the UEFA Europa Conference League (UECL) goal of the tournament for the 2022/23 season.
Although the 24-year-old was omitted from Nigeria’s squad for the clash against Sierra Leone despite scoring more than any other Nigerian striker in Europe’s top five leagues aside from Victor Osimhen,  he however becomes the first Nigerian to win goal of the season in the competition.
The Nigeria international scored two first-half goals as Nice held Basel to a 2-2 draw in the first leg of their quarter-final clash at St. Jakob-Park.
Moffi’s second strike was a thing of beauty as it was an overhead kick executed properly from Gaetan Larbode’s cross which left Marwin Hitz with no chance.
The goal was voted back then as the goal of the week, beating strikes from Majeed Ashimeru for Anderlecht against AZ Alkmaar, Jonathan Ikone’s finish for Fiorentina against Lech Poznan and Hugo Cuypers’ goal for Gent against West Ham.
Once again, UEFA revisited the astonishing goal while collating contenders for the goal of the tournament and Moffi’s goal made it to the list of 10 superb nominees by the UEFA Technical Observer Panel.
The former Kortrijk finished the UECL campaign with three goals in four games to end his campaign with 21 goals in 38 matches.
Meanwhile, his compatriot Samuel Chukwueze was also nominated for his goal in Villarreal’s 4-3 win against Bulgarian club, Lech Poznan on matchday one. Although, he finished fourth.
“Goals of the 2022/23 UEFA Europa Conference League campaign have been selected by UEFA’s Technical Observer panel, with Terem Moffi’s acrobatic effort for Nice at Basel earning the honor of Goal of the Season,” reads a statement on UEFA’s website.
Lazio talisman Ciro Immobile claimed the runners-up spot while Andy Diouf, the Young Player of the Season, came third – one of two top-ten entries for the Basel youngster.”
