Nigeria international Toni Payne was on target as Sevilla defeated Madrid CFF 4-2 in the Spanish Primera Iberdrola encounter on Sunday.
The Super Falcons star made her 12th start on her 15th appearance for Cristian Toro’s ladies and she did enough to end her goal drought this season, while playing a key role in their first league triumph in six matches.
Boosted by a 1-0 triumph at Villarreal in Copa De La Reina, the Rojablancas built on the winning mentality when Imma Gabarro opened the scoring in the eighth minute at the Ramon Cisneros Palacios Stadium.
Seven minutes later, Payne doubled the lead with her first goal of the season off Amanda Sampredo assist before Zambia forward Grace Chanda pulled one back for the visitors six minutes from the half time break.
After the restart, Sevilla picked up from where they stopped in the first half with Sampredo scoring from the spot kick just three minutes into the second half. Four minutes later, Martin-Prieto extended the hosts’ lead before Sevilla were reduced to ten players as Nazareth Martin received a straight red card in the 64th minute.
Inside additional time, the visitors managed to reduce the deficit when Gabi Nunes found the back of the net for the visitors with six minutes into added time but her effort was not enough to half the hosts’ return to winning ways.
Payne has now opened her liga goal scoring account for the season and has recorded four assists in 16 outings.
Sevilla are tenth on the log with 16 points and will next face Sporting Huelva.
