Nigeria international defender Tyrone Ebehi was on target for Empoli, but it was not enough, as Ademola Lookman’s Atalanta staged a second-half comeback to secure a 2-1 victory at the Gewiss Stadium.
Atalanta dominated from start to finish as they look to snap a four-game winless run but it was Empoli who went ahead first.
Ebuehi gave the visitors the lead in the 44th minute of the game when a rebound fell kindly into his path and brilliantly put at the back of the net from a close range to take the halftime victory.
The visitors came close to doubling their advantage at the start of the second half but fell short due to poor finishing.
Marten de Roon then powers a header past Samuele Perisan in the 58th minute to pull the hosts’ level.
With pressure mounting on the visitors in the closing stages, Atalanta brought on Lookman, Jeremy Boga, and the eventual match-winner Hojlund with less than 15 minutes to go.
Rasmus Winther Hojlund proved to be a super sub as his strike in the 86th minute won the game for Atalanta with Lookman as the contributor.
The Nigerian had an opportunity to end his six-game goal drought, but he missed the big chance, extending his disappointing run of firing blanks to seven games.
Ebuehi now has two goals this season and lasted the duration of the encounter, making three clearances, blocked two shots, and completed a tackle.
While Lookman, who came on as a second half substitute saw the final 14 minutes of action was called up by Jose Peseiro for the AFCON qualifiers against Guinea, Ebuehi missed out.
