U17 Afcon: Sambo Choji advises Nduka Ugbade on players’ selection
By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Former Nigeria’s 1993 U-17 FIFA World Cup winner, Sambo Choji has advised the current coach of the team Nduka Ugbade to be careful about who he invites to the national team for the upcoming championship in Algeria.
His advice is coming ahead of the Magnetic Resonance (MRI) Test expected to be performed to determine the eligibility of players for the 2023 U-17 African Cup of Nations as the team resumed camp in Abuja on Monday.
Choji was an integral member of the Nigeria U-17 team, which won the FIFA World Under-17 Championship in 1993 in Tokyo, Japan and he is sounding a clear warning to the current Golden Eaglets coach.
“He should definitely know who to invite and not to invite to the national team because of the MRI scan that will decide the age of players,” Choji told Brila FM.
“He needs to be extra careful about it and make sure that he gets younger talents which is very important. My advice for the coach is to be very careful in whatever he is going to do when it comes to selection of players.”
Ugbade has invited 48 players for the camping exercise in preparation for the U-17 AFCON.
Nigeria are five-time champion of the FIFA U17 World Cup after triumphs in China in 1985, Japan in 1993, Korea Republic in 2007, United Arab Emirates in 2013, and Chile in 2015.
He played all games operating in the left flank as Nigeria beat title holders, Ghana, to be crowned champions a second time.
