U20 AFCON: Nigeria drawn against Egypt, South Africa, and Morocco in Group B
By Dayo Awoniyi
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have been handed a daunting task after they were drawn into a fiercely competitive Group B against Egypt, South Africa, and Morocco in a battle for supremacy at the 2025 Africa U20 Cup of Nations.
This grouping has been dubbed the “Group of Death” by none other than former Malian player Adama Coulibaly, who assisted in the draw ceremony at the CAF headquarters in Egypt.
Nigeria’s recent history with Egypt will undoubtedly add an extra layer of spice to their encounter with the Flying Eagles emerged victorious in their previous meeting, edging the Egyptians 1-0 in the group phase of the last edition.
However, with the stakes higher than ever, Nigeria must be prepared to face a rejuvenated Egyptian side, as well as the formidable challenges posed by South Africa and Morocco.
As the tournament prepares to kick off in Cote d’Ivoire from April 26 to May 18, the Flying Eagles will need to hit the ground running.
A strong start to their campaign will be crucial in building confidence and momentum, as they bid to improve on their third-place finish in Egypt two years ago.
With the top two teams from each group, plus the best two third-placed finishers, advancing to the quarterfinals, the competition promises to be fierce and unpredictable.
FULL DRAW:
GROUP A: Cote d’Ivoire, UNNIFAC, DR Congo, Ghana, Tanzania
GROUP B: Nigeria, Egypt, South Africa, Morocco
GROUP C: Senegal, Zambia, Kenya, Sierra Leone
