Uchenna Kanu thrilled with historic Nigeria strike, dedicates goal to sister’s birthday

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigerian superstar Uchenna Kanu has dedicated her first Women’s World Cup to her birthday-sister Joy Kanu after she netted her nation’s first goal of the tournament against Australia in their group stage clash on Thursday.

The Racing Louisville striker came on as a replacement for Francisca Ordega against Canada, but could not find the back of the net for mark her first appearance on her second Women’s World Cup outing in Melbourne.

Having got the starting role against the Maltidas, the former Sevilla striker missed twice in the first half before cancelling out Emily Von Egmond opener with her first goal on the brink of half timeat the Lang Park in Brisbane.

Instead of revelling in the moment herself, Kanu opted to dedicate the glorious moment to her sister, whose birthday fell on the same day while recounting the excitement of inspiring her nation’s 3-2 comeback win over the co-hosts.

“I’m super excited and happy. It means the world to me because is the biggest stage of my career, is a dream come true for me and I give God the glory,” , Kanu told NigeriaFootball.

“It was also my sister’s birthday and I dedicated the goal to her. Each time there’s a counter attack or forward transitions during play, I try as much as possible to engage myself in the situation.

“Looking back at the goal scoring chance that brought my goal, as soon as I saw Rash [Ajibade] dribbling towards goal I ran a hard as I could to get in the box for any deflections or rebounds.

“So thankfully I arrived on time after Rash took a shot that was deflected to my direction and I finished.”

The Super Falcons is in a run of five match unbeaten streak after overcoming a run of seven games without a win since WAFCON 2022.
The nine-time African champions has recovered from coach outburst and match bonuses row to put up a superb performance at the world stage which Kanu attributed to various form of motivations.
“I believe each one of us has their individual motivations,” she added. “I mean, We are from all over the place in pursuit of a common cause, being a role model to many and representing different things.
“Also, we have all been putting in the work and training well as a team even before the tournament commenced. We have a group of players that are hungry for success and coupled with the financial motivation from FIFA of course we will do everything possible to win.
“We first do our grand arrival at the stadium, psych each other up, and say our prayer. The coaches reiterate the game plan and also tell us how much they believe in us. Then we all do our individual game day “rituals” before kickoff.”
The ever-present team at the Women’s World Cup has not gotten past the quarter-final of the tournament since only making it out of the group stage twice in 1999 and 2019 and Kanu believes the story will be different this time.
“Nigerians should expect nothing but the soaring Super Falcons they’ve always known.” She continued.
“We will continue to make Nigerians proud as the tournament progresses. It is an honor to bring joy to Nigerians in this trying time and we appreciate their support. I aim to enjoy the game and be at my best and hopefully get more goals.
“I was part of the group that set the round of 16 record for the team. This time, our goal is to beat that record and we are working hard to achieve that. It takes one game at a time and we are focused,” she concluded.
