UEFA Champions League: Heavy home defeats for Super Eagles’ stars

Things did not end as envisaged for Nigerian players in the Matchday 5 of UEFA champions League on Tuesday with a disappointing defeats at their home grounds for Calvin Bassey’s Ajax and Raphael Onyedika’s Club Brugge.
For Bassey, the defender was in action for the entire duration when Ajax were outplayed by Liverpool with a commanding 3-0 win.
Mohammed Sallah, Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliot scored the goals for Liverpool condemned the Dutch side to a home defeat and see the English club qualify to the knockout stages of the competition.
The defeat and the manner it happened also saw Ajax failed to score a goal at home for the first time in 24 games in all competitions. Bassey will now need a decent result in their group at Rangers to stand a chance of making it to The Europa League.
It was a similar but even more worrying for Onyedika and his Belgian side, Club Bruggee ans the Nigerian young defender saw most part of his side’s 4-0 home loss to FC Porto.
That match that also had another Nigerian player in Zaidu Sanusi with Porto saw the visitors taking a first half lead with the goal from Taremi Mehdi.
Brugge could have leveled on in the first half, but Noa Lang missed the chance from the spot kick to confirmed a miserable night for the club.
The visitors would then scored three more goals in second half through Evanilson, Estuquaio and a second from Medhi.
The match also saw both Onyedika and Sanusi subbed off from the game that ended in mixed fortunes for either side.
Respite the contrasting outcome, Onyedika and Sanusi have secured their places in the knockout stages by virtue of points accrued and their position rendering Athletico Madrid to the less fancied UEFA Europa League.
