Vera Samuel: ‘We are hungry to make CAF Women’s Champions League history with Bayelsa Queens’

After winning Player of the Match in Bayelsa Queens’ 3-0 victory over ASKO, midfielder Vera Samuel reflected on her performance, her journey, and the team’s bigger ambitions.
The former Royal Queens FC player is enjoying continental experience for three straight years and basking in the euphoria.
“Being named Player of the Match means everything to me. It shows I am on the right path, and that our preparations are paying off. I’m happy and grateful, but this award is also for my teammates — from the goalkeeper to the defenders, midfielders, and attackers — everyone gave a strong performance. All glory belongs to God.”
Samuel, who previously featured in the CAF Women’s Champions League Qualifiers with Delta Queens (2023) and Edo Queens (2024), said those experiences continue to drive her forward.
“Qualifying with Delta Queens didn’t go as planned, but I learned from it. With Edo Queens, I gained more experience during WAFU-B, and I’ve brought that to Bayelsa Queens. Finishing fourth in the CAF Women’s Champions League with Edo Queens was painful, but it taught me to play every game like it’s a final.”
Now, her focus is clear: Bayelsa Queens want to go further than any Nigerian team has before.
“The NWFL Premiership motivates us, but our biggest drive is to qualify for the CAF Women’s Champions League and win it. Nigerian clubs have represented three times, but no one has brought the trophy home yet. We want to be the first team to make history.”
The striker believes the hunger within the squad can power them to glory.
“From the league to the Super Six to this WAFU-B tournament, you can see how much we want it. We are hungry to bring the CAF Women’s Champions League trophy to Nigeria, and by God’s grace, we will.”
The Prosperity Girls will round up Group B campaign at the West Africa Zone B (WAFU-B) Women’s Champions League Qualifiers against Sam Nelly FC.
