Newly recruited Confluence Queens midfielder Amarachi Okoronkwo has revealed that she agreed to sign for the Lokoja based side because she fell in love with the exploits and was guaranteed of regular playing time at the club.
The Nigeria international joined Confluence Queens from rivals Nasarawa Amazons during the mid-season transfer window of the ongoing Nigeria Women Football League Premiership season, having being starved of playing time.
Following her switch, the former Rivers Angels star said she did not hesitate to append her signature to the contract papers after her demands of getting regular playing time and on-field chance to inspire young girls were accepted.
“When I was at Nasarawa Amazons, I had some issues of not playing much as I want which I wasn’t really happy about,” Okoronkwo told Nigeriafootball.ng.
“So I spoke with Coach Whyte (Confluence Queens) that I want to come and work with him and he accepted that I can come.
“On my arrival, the first thing the coach told me was the need of improved leadership in the team and that he would like me to command the team and since I came, I’ve been doing that, both in training and in the camp.
“I’m happy it yielded positives with how we played today. We have a very young team with players that really want to develop and are humble as well, I’m optimistic we will do much better from now on.”
The 30-year-old made a winning debut for Confluence Queens as she lasted the entire duration in the team’s 2-0 victory over Ibom Angels in a NWFL Premiership match at the Confluence Stadium on Friday.
Reacting to her impactful winning debut and her role, the two-time Africa Women’s Cup of Nations winner is excited about the result and is fully committed to leading the club to domestic glory this season.
“It’s a very good game and I’m glad how we approached it to get the win,” the Super Falcons midfielder continued.
“Before the game, I spoke to the girls how important it was for us to go out there for one another one which of course I pushed them through the match and I thank God for the victory.
“It’s a good start for me, I’m hoping to get more game times here and it will help with my fitness, because you get better and more fitter when you play than when you don’t play, I believe when I’m playing now, I will fit into the way I used to play and make us more stronger,” she concluded.
The win marked Whyte Ogbonda’s fourth straight win of the season and takes them to second on the log, level on points with leaders Nasarawa Amazons on 13 goals from seven matches this season.
Confluence Queens will be resting for the next Matchday nine before returning to play consecutive home games and Okoronkwo’s experience will be more needed in the team’s Super Six quest in the upcoming matches.
