Victor Boniface explains active social media presence amid criticism over form

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria striker and Werder Bremen forward, Victor Boniface, has opened up on why he remains active on social media despite facing criticism from some fans over his recent dip in form.

The 23-year-old has come under scrutiny in recent weeks, with sections of supporters suggesting that his frequent online posts may be a distraction. But Boniface has dismissed such claims, explaining that social media serves as a coping mechanism, not a diversion from football.

Speaking to Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger ahead of Bremen’s Bundesliga clash with 1. FC Köln on Saturday, Boniface clarified: “I only post these things to distract myself a bit from everything else. It’s nothing serious.”

He explained that the backlash has little to do with the content of his posts and more with his current form. According to him, he used social media in the exact same way during his successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen—only then, fans had no complaints.

“I did the same thing when I was in Leverkusen. I’ve used this exact caption before. The difference is back then, I scored goals and we won everything. Nobody talked about it.”

The Nigerian forward added that footballers are constantly judged by their latest performances, with expectations rising after every successful season.

“In football, it’s like this: if you play well one season and score goals, everyone expects you to repeat that in exactly the same way the following season. Otherwise, people start talking.”

Boniface has struggled to find the net with his usual consistency this campaign but remains optimistic that he will regain his form as the season progresses.

Werder Bremen will be counting on the striker’s confidence and resilience as they continue their push for stability in the Bundesliga.
