By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigerian forward, Victor Boniface has been nominated for the 2022/2023 Belgian Pro League Player of the season.

Boniface is one of three finalists shortlisted for the award, alongside teammate Teddy Teuma and Genk’s attacking midfielder of Burundi descent, Mike Tresor Ndayishimiye.

If he wins the award, he will become the second Nigerian player to win the award after Paul Onuachu won it last season with KRC Genk before heading to English side, Southampton.

The 22-year-old player has scored nine goals with seven assists for Royale Union SG in the Belgian top-flight league during the 2022/2023 league season.

The 2022/2023 season was Boniface’s first season with Royale Union SG after he had spent the previous four seasons with the Norwegian side, Bodø/Glimt.

Boniface signed for Glimt from Lagos side, Real Sapphire on 4 March 2019 and suffered a ligament injury only two weeks after signing, keeping him on the sidelines for the entire duration of the 2019 season.

The forward was selected to the Nigeria U-20 squad to play in the 2019 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations but had to withdraw from the squad due to an injury

In September 2019, the Nigerian made his league debut for Bodø/Glimt and  later signed a four-year contract with Union SG in Belgium on 8 August 2022.
