Victor Osimhen equals Diego Maradona’s goalscoring Napoli’s record

With his hat trick against Sassuolo on Wednesday night, Victor Osimhen has now matched Diego Maradona’s goalscoring record for Napoli.

The Nigerian international has scored five goals in three matches since returning from the 2023 AFCON.

Along with the hat trick, the 25-year-old also added an assist in the 51st minute, when he teed up Georgian Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for Napoli’s fifth goal on the night.

Despite missing one month of action for the club due to the AFCON tournament with Nigeria in Cote d’Ivoire, he has taken his tally for the season to 11 goals in 15 Serie A appearances.

The former Lille forward has joined an elite group of players in the Partenopei history that includes legend Diego Maradona.

According to reputable sports analytics company Opta, Osimhen is one of only three players in Napoli’s history to have scored 10 or more goals for four consecutive seasons.

Argentine legend Diego Armando Maradona achieved the same feat for Napoli between 1984/85 and 1987/88 while Italian striker Attila Sallustro did so between 1929/30 and 1932/33.
