Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen has revealed his passion for more recognition following his maiden Ballon d’Or nomination.
The nominees for the 2023 Ballon d’Or men’s and women’s awards was released on Thursday with Osimhen making the 30-man shortlist for the first time in his career.
The 24-year-old becomes the first Nigerian to be nominated for the prestigious prize, twenty-four years after Nwankwo Kanu in 1999, a year that saw Papilo take home his second African Footballer of the Year award.
The Super Eagles star was instrumental in Napoli’s bagging its first Scudetto title in 33 years last season.
Along with the Scudetto, the former Royal Charleroi forward also won the award for best forward in Serie A, as well as the Capocannoniere (Italian Golden Boot), smashing George Weah’s long-standing African goal record and claimed the Serie A top scorer title scoring 26 goals and providing five assists for Napoli.
Reacting while on international with Nigeria facing up with Sao Tome and Principe in their last Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Osimhen revealed his admiration for the recognition.
“I must say it is a dream come true for me. It is a big honor for me and my family,” Osimhen told media.
“I have worked so hard for a moment like this and I must say it is a reward for all the years of hard work and dedication. This can only spur me to do better and get more recognition.”
