Vivian Ikechukwu on target as Santos Laguna fall to Club América in nine-goal thriller

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria forward Vivian Ikechukwu was on the scoresheet for Santos Laguna, but her effort was not enough to prevent a 6-3 defeat against league leaders Club América in the Mexican Liga MX Femenil on Friday.

The hosts made a flying start as Irene Guerrero opened the scoring in the 7th minute, before Sandra Nabweteme leveled for Santos in the 29th.

Just before the break, Scarlett Camberos restored América’s lead in the 45th minute.

Camberos struck again 12 minutes into the second half to make it 3-1, but Ikechukwu — a former Rivers Angels striker — reduced the deficit in the 64th minute with her second goal of the season.

However, América’s attacking firepower proved decisive as Montserrat Saldivar bagged a brace and Bruna Vilamala also found the net to seal the victory.

Santos grabbed a consolation through Alexa Gabriela Hernández Ponce, but it was too little, too late.

Ikechukwu, who has now scored two goals in seven appearances, played the full 90 minutes for Santos Laguna.

The defeat leaves her side in 14th place on the table with four points from seven matches, ahead of their next fixture against UNAM Pumas on September 2.

Meanwhile, Club América stay top of the standings with 24 points, and will face Pachuca on September 1.
