Vivian Ikechukwu scores as Santos Laguna fall to San Luis in Liga MX

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria’s Vivian Ikechukwu was on target for Santos Laguna, but her effort was not enough to prevent a 3–1 defeat to San Luis in their Mexican Liga MX Femenil clash on Sunday.

The former Rivers Angels forward opened the scoring for the visitors in the 37th minute, giving Santos Laguna a deserved first-half lead with a composed finish.

However, the hosts responded strongly after the break. Rebeca Contreras drew San Luis level on the hour mark, before Citlali Hernández fired them ahead in the 73rd minute.

Ilana Iszuierdo added a third to seal the win as Santos struggled to cope after being reduced to nine players.

Alexa Gabriela Hernández and Sasha Pickard were both sent off for Santos Laguna, leaving the visitors short-handed in the closing stages.

Despite the defeat, Ikechukwu was one of the bright spots for her side, completing the full 90 minutes and netting her sixth league goal in 14 appearances this season.

Santos Laguna sit 15th on the Liga MX Femenil table with 12 points after 17 games, as they look to climb away from the lower end of the standings in the coming weeks.
