By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Head coach of Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, Justine Madugu has expressed measured confidence in his team’s progress following their most recent outing at the ongoing being a 0-0 draw with Algeria tournament, as preparations intensify ahead of the quarterfinal stage.
Speaking after the match, Madugu emphasized the team’s commitment to winning every game, acknowledging that while the result was not as expected, valuable lessons were learned.
“Each time we play, the expectation is to win. That is the way it is meant to be. Today’s game is done and dusted. It has not gotten to the level we expect, but we will continue to work on areas where we noticed shortcomings,” Madugu stated.
The coach highlighted goal scoring as a growing area of concern, noting that the team has struggled to convert chances despite having previously performed well in front of goal prior to the tournament.
“Before this tournament, we were scoring goals. In this competition, goal scoring has become a challenge. The same players who were scoring are still here, so we have to address this issue quickly.”
Madugu defended his squad selection and rotations, saying all players are valued and capable contributors, regardless of whether they start or come off the bench.
“I don’t see them as a ‘Team B’. They are part of the squad and have contributed significantly. I’m impressed with many of them—they gave their best. Had we converted our chances, there would be more pressure in deciding who starts the next game.”
The coach also praised Chinwendu Ihezuo, who has been impactful in previous matches, reiterating his trust in her and the rest of the squad.
“Chinwendu is a very good player. She’s shown her quality coming off the bench and scoring for us. That she didn’t score today doesn’t change that. We’ll evaluate all factors as we prepare for the next match.”
Looking ahead to the quarterfinal, Madugu emphasized the need for complete focus and readiness across all aspects of the team’s play.
“There are no rooms for errors now. We must be 100% mentally, psychologically, physically, and tactically ready. We’ve studied our potential opponents and will fine-tune our strategy. The quarterfinals demand our absolute best.”
Madugu also credited their opponents in the last match for showing hunger and drive, while stressing that his team gave their all and remain focused on progressing further.
With training sessions ahead of the quarterfinal, the coaching team is working to address key tactical areas, with the goal of returning to winning form and advancing to the semifinals.
