WAFCON 2024 Final: Super Falcons Set for Back-to-Back Showdown with Hosts Morocco

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

In a thrilling repeat of their 2022 encounter, Nigeria’s senior women’s national team will face hosts Atlas Lionesses of Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with the coveted continental title on the line.

This marks the second consecutive WAFCON edition where both sides meet, following their dramatic semi-final clash in 2022, where Morocco edged Nigeria on penalties to advance to their first-ever final.

Morocco booked their place in the 2024 final after a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Ghana, eventually triumphing 4-2 on penalties in front of a home crowd in Rabat.

Afua Josephine Bonsu Kyerewaa stunned the host nation with a well-taken opener for Ghana, but Morocco’s Sakina Ouzraoui Dikki—later named Player of the Match—equalized ten minutes into the second half. With no further goals in extra time, the match was settled in a tense shootout, where the Atlas Lionesses held their nerve to advance.

The Super Falcons, meanwhile, are fresh off a 2-1 semi-final victory over South Africa, avenging their 2022 loss and moving one step closer to a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.

Saturday’s final will not only determine the new champions of African women’s football but will also reignite a growing rivalry between two of the continent’s most ambitious sides.

Morocco, spurred on by home support, will seek redemption after losing the 2022 final to South Africa, while Nigeria aim to reclaim their crown and confirm their dominance in African women’s football.
