WAFCON 2024: Gift Monday responds to Nigeria omission with message of support

By Wale Mustapha

Washington Spirit forward Gift Monday has reacted to her omission from Nigeria’s final squad for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), expressing disappointment but offering her full support to the Super Falcons.

Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu released his 24-player list for the tournament on Friday, with Monday among the notable absentees.

The 22-year-old has been in strong form in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) this season, registering four goals and one assist in nine appearances for Washington Spirit.

In a statement posted on her Instagram page, the former FC Robo Queens striker acknowledged the decision and reaffirmed her commitment to the national team.

“I have seen the official squad list for the upcoming WAFCON tournament and yes, my name isn’t on it,” Monday wrote.

“While it hurts and is a tough pill to swallow, I want to make it clear that I hold no grudges, no resentment.”

“I am hale and hearty, fully fit, and still deeply in love with the game and the green, white, green,” she continued.

“Though I won’t be on the pitch with the team in Morocco, my heart will be there every step of the way.”

Monday concluded by pledging her support from afar: “I remain fully committed to cheering my country from home, lifting every prayer and every shout of support for the badge we all fight so hard to represent.”

The 2024 WAFCON is set to take place in Morocco, with Nigeria aiming to reclaim the title after being eliminated in the semi-finals in the previous edition.
