WAFU-B U20 Women’s Cup: Nigeria 3-0 Benin- Esther Onyenezide leads Falconets rout
By Saheed Afolabi
Nigeria continued their impressive run in the WAFU-B U20 Women’s Cup with a 3-0 semi-final victory over Benin Republic on Wednesday in Kumasi, Ghana.
Cruising from a perfect group stage, Christopher Danjuma’s ladies required a brace from Esther Onyenezide and Amina Bello strike to guarantee their place in the final of the maiden regional showpiece.
The mesmerizing midfielder Bello put the Falconets ahead with a great finish in the 24th minute.
Flourish Sabastine handed the Nigeria a penalty as she dribbled her way through the Benin defense before she was hacked down in the 18 yard box as Onyenezide made no mistake to put the ball at the back of the net.
The Falconets took the lead to the break as they courted for more goals in the second half.
Nigeria had series of chances to extend to their tally no thanks to their wastefulness in front of goal.
However, the combination of midfield duo of Taiwo Afolabi and Onyenezide was efficient in the game as both combined together to score the Falconets third goal of the game.
Despite having 12 shots on target, the Falconets put three goals past Benin Republic who could not muster a shot on target in 90 minutes regulation time.
With the win, Nigeria will face host nation, Ghana in the final of the Wafu B U20 tournament at the Baba Yara stadium, Kumasi Ghana on Saturday June 3.
