WAFU-B Women’s Cup: ‘Falconets will do Nigerians proud’ – Christopher Danjuma

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Head coach of Nigeria U-20 girls, Christopher Danjuma says that the girls that he selected for the West African Football Union Zone B (WAFU-B) Women’s Cup are very capable of doing the country’s proud in Ghana.

The Falconets arrived in the hosts city, Kumazi for the eight-nation regional tournament on Thursday and the Nasarawa Amazons tactician, who included Taiwo Afolabi and Esther Onyenezide, Flourish Sebastine and Opeyemi Ajakaye in his woman squad, is upbeat they can achieve the impossible at the inaugural youth competition.

“I want us to know that teams in Africa have come off age. When any team goes to a tournament where we have Nigeria, we become the yardstick where every team wants to measure their level of Development.” Danjuma told Brila FM.

“We are going out there as Champions, holding forth in Africa. We are going there to do the nation proud. With due respect to every team, we are not going to under-estimate any team. Every team that makes it to a tournament isn’t a pushover.”

This year’s tournament, scheduled for 20 May – 4 June, pits the Falconets in Group B against the U20 girls of Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, and Togo.

Ghana and Benin Republic will lift the curtain on the tournament at the Baba Yara Stadium on Saturday, May 20 before FIFA World Cup quarter-finalists take on Niger Republic on Sunday, 21 May.

The Falconets will later slug it out with Togo on 24 May, also at the Baba Yara Stadium, before trading tackle with Burkina Faso Paa Joe Stadium on Sunday, 28 May.
