‘We have not decided on Jose Peseiro’s contract’ – NFF President Ibrahim Gusau

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau says his leadership the football governing body in the country has not taken any decision on the contract of senior national team coach, Jose Peseiro.

In June 2020, Peseiro signed a year contract with the West African side and with few days to his contract expirations, the NFF are reportedly in search of a replacement as they seek to break ties with the Portuguese trainer.

With the three-time African champions scheduled to face Sierra Leone in June, the former NFF chairman of chairmen has broken his silence over the increasing speculations surounding the future of the Super Eagles manager.

“I don’t know where they got these reports from because I have not mandated anybody to search for a new coach neither has NFF opened discussions with anyone to replace our current coach,” Gusau told Completesport.com.

“To be candid we have not even at board level taken a decision on Peseiro’s contract not to talk of engaging a new coach. All I can tell you is that the NFF will decide whether to extend Paseiro’s contract or terminate it soon when we meet. Honestly, I don’t know where they got those stories from. Whatever decision we reach shall be made public”

Since he took charge of the Super Eagles, the team has won three out of nine games, with those victories coming against Sierra Leone, Sao Tome and Principe, and Guinea Bissau in the 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

In his nine outings, the country have lost friendly games against Mexico, Ecuador, Algeria, Costa Rica, and Portugal, and at home to Guinea Bissau in 2023 AFCON qualifiers.

Nigeria currently tops Group A of the AFCON qualifiers with seven points after four games, two points ahead of Guinea Bissau, and four points better than Sierra Leone.

Peseiro’s side will face Sierra Leone and Sao Tome in its last two games in a bid to qualify for Cote d’Ivoire 2023.
