Nigeria international, Wilfred Ndidi, has revealed that he was inspired by legendary midfielder Mikel Obi to switch from playing as a central defender to a midfielder—a decision that has shaped his successful career.

Ndidi, now 27, made the move to Leicester City during the winter transfer window of 2017. Since then, he has become a key figure for the Foxes, winning the EFL Championship, the FA Cup, and the Community Shield with the club.

However, his transition from defense to midfield wasn’t an accident; it was largely inspired by the influence of Mikel Obi, the former Chelsea star.

In an interview with the Premier League YouTube channel’s Uncut show, Ndidi opened up about his admiration for Mikel and how it influenced his decision to change positions on the pitch.

“It was Mikel Obi. He was the one who inspired me. I used to be a central defender, but I was so in love with Mikel,” Ndidi shared. “When I was younger, I wanted the number twelve shirt because of Mikel at Chelsea. Also, he was in the Premier League, so yeah.”

Ndidi’s admiration for Mikel, who was known for his calm and composed style of play in midfield, led him to model his own game after the Nigerian icon.

Ndidi’s development in a similar role has earned him recognition as one of the top midfielders in the Premier League, admired for his tenacity, work rate, and ability to break up opposition attacks.

As a key player for Leicester City, Ndidi now finds himself playing in the same position that Mikel once excelled in. “As a player in the same role now, and in the Premier League, I feel so good,” Ndidi reflected.

“Even back home, everyone wants to get on it and support their Nigerian footballers. They’re so aggressive, and they show a lot of intensity in watching the league, but it’s amazing.”

Ndidi’s journey from central defense to midfield has not only enhanced his personal career but also contributed significantly to Nigeria’s footballing legacy, with both players inspiring the next generation of Nigerian talent.
