Second-tier English Championship leaders, Leicester City recorded their most comprehensive win of the season thus far with a 4-1 victory over Southampton at Saint Mary’s Stadium on Friday.
With both relegated teams from the English Premier League (EPL) last season looking to secure an immediate return to the English top-flight, it was the hosts that looked more purposeful.
Foxes fans were dreaming of a repeat of a club record 9-0 thrashing of the same opponent in 2019 at Saint Mary’s when they took the lead after 22 seconds when Jamie Vardy who bagged a hat trick during the 9-0 win fired home.
An error from Will Smallbone led to Kasey McAteer doubling the lead before another mistake from Callum Doyle allowed the host to pull one back through Samuel Edozie but were on the back foot in the remainder of the first half.
After Gavin Bazuna had made a trio of saves from Wilfred Ndidi and Stephy Mavididi twice, Ndidi showed great composure to make it 3-1 in injury time.
In the second time, Mavididi slid into the corner to round off a cutting counterattack.
To compound the hosts’ misery, Sulemana was sent off for a poor tackle on James Justin deep into stoppage time.
Ndidi was replaced by Cesare Casadei in the 58th minute while Kelechi Iheanacho replaced Vardy in the 84th minute.
The Foxes bounced back from their shocking defeat to Hull City before the international break to make it five wins from six league outings, their best start to a campaign this century.
