Nigeria’s captain, William Troost-Ekong, has responded to Jamie Carragher’s controversial comments about the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), offering a detailed and passionate defense of the tournament’s significance to African football.

Carragher had previously downplayed the value of AFCON, suggesting that it lacked the prestige of other major international competitions, like the Euros or World Cup, in determining a player’s individual success.

However, Troost-Ekong, who led Nigeria to a second-place finish in the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire and was voted the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, took to social media to correct Carragher’s views.

“Africa as a continent continues to reveal itself. A new generation of exciting talents continuously emerges, building on the household names and legendary players that paved the way. This should be recognized and celebrated by all,” Troost-Ekong wrote.

While Troost-Ekong has represented Nigeria at the World Cup and the Olympic Games, he stated that he feels the deepest connection to AFCON.

“Internationally, representing Nigeria at the Olympics, World Cup, and now three AFCONs, it’s the latter that I pride myself on the most,” he said, pointing out that AFCON remains a source of immense pride for African players.

Troost-Ekong also spoke about the ambitions of his teammates, highlighting the case of Ademola Lookman, who despite his success in Europe, continues to harbor the dream of winning the prestigious AFCON title.

“For my teammates, like Ademola Lookman, who was raised in the diaspora but chose to proudly represent Nigeria, this tournament is the ultimate dream,” he added.

The former Watford and Udinese defender stressed the growing global impact of African football, noting that the continent’s players have contributed significantly to the world’s love for the game.

“The African continent, as the others in the world, has brought as much to the game of football that we all love. So let’s not waste time comparing but celebrating one of the crown jewels of the game that brings us all together,” he stated.

Troost-Ekong concluded by reaffirming the excitement surrounding AFCON, citing the thrilling nature of the recent tournament in Côte d’Ivoire and expressing eager anticipation for the 2025 edition in Morocco.

“Despite losing the final in Ivory Coast this time last year, the tournament was undeniably exciting from start to finish,” he said, adding, “Can’t wait to enjoy and compete with some of the world’s finest talents.”

Through his statement, Troost-Ekong called for greater recognition of AFCON’s importance, encouraging global football fans to celebrate the achievements of African football rather than diminish them.
