Women’s World Cup: Super Falcons return to training for England showdown

Nigeria’s senior women’s national team players on Thursday returned to training ahead of the Round of 16 clash with European champions, England following a brief break from 0-0 draw with Ireland.
The nine-time African champions returned to training at Lion FC ground in preparation for their knockout stage encounter with the English Lionesses slated to take place on Monday.
Players started training for the crunch tie after a two-day recovery routine to recover from their last group encounter against debutant, the Republic of Ireland which ended in a 0-0 draw.
Randy Waldrum’s side finished second in Group B with five points after goalless draws with Olympic champions, Canada and the Republic of Ireland.
The team stunned co-host, Australia 3-2 to end the group stage in an unbeaten fashion, the first time the ever-present team at the FIFA Women’s World Cup will play three group games without a loss.
England on the other hand topped Group D with a maximum of nine points.
Sarina Wiegmen’s side had a slow start to their Women’s World Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over Haiti and Denmark before securing a 6-1 thrashing of Asian champions, China on Tuesday.
This will be the second time both sides will be meeting at the World Cup with the first encounter ending in a 3-2 win for the European side at the 1995 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Sweden.
