Women’s World Cup: ‘You gave your all’ – First Lady applauds Super Falcons
By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has praised the senior women’s national team for their resilient display at the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup.
She applauded the unbreakable spirit and unity of the team on the field of play against the best teams in the world while hosting the team at Aso Villa, Abuja, on Monday.
At the occasion, Tinubu hailed the Super Falcons for their outing at the biggest stage possible, saying their hard work, focus and determination were seen and appreciated by Nigerians at home and in the diaspora. She minced no words in saying they made Nigerians proud with their scintillating football and deserve to be honoured.
She also prayed for quick recovery for the mother of goalkeeper and on-field captain Chiamaka Nnadozie, who underwent medical operation last week. The first-choice goalkeeper was therefore unable to attend the occasion as scheduled.
“Although the final result did not go our way, I am here to remind you the victory is not solely determined by the score on the field,” Senator Tinubu told the players while welcoming them from Australia.
“The unbreakable spirit and unity that you demonstrated are true markers of success. You gave your all, we stand with you and we are so proud of you.”
Three players of the team were present for the First Lady hosting in Abuja, which include Tochukwu Oluehi, Onome Ebi, and Christy Ucheibe.
The Super Falcons reached the Round of 16 of the World Cup and lost 4-2 on penalties to European champions, England.
The nine-time African champions didn’t lose any of their four games in regulation time, keeping three clean sheets in the process.
