Yan Diomande became the youngest African player to score and provide an assist in a single UEFA Champions League match since September 2003 as Real Madrid beat Leipzig 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old Ivory Coast international made a decisive impact after coming on as a substitute in the 70th minute against his former club.

According to Opta, Diomande is the youngest African player to achieve the feat since Nigeria international Obafemi Martins did so for Internazionale against Arsenal in September 2003.

Diomande set up Real Madrid’s third goal for Kylian Mbappe in the 83rd minute before completing the scoring himself four minutes later. He finished a swift personal contribution with a powerful strike from inside the penalty area.

Opta described the achievement as “Special” in a post dated 21 October 2026.

The performance came at an important stage of Real Madrid’s season, with the club preparing to visit rivals Barcelona in La Liga on Sunday.

Barcelona lead the Spanish top flight with 27 points, while Real Madrid are third on 21 points. The defending European champions have already suffered two domestic defeats this season, losing 1-0 to Real Betis and 2-1 to Atletico de Madrid.

Diomande’s appearance against Leipzig was his first opportunity to face the club after leaving it, and he made an immediate impression with a goal and an assist in the closing stages.
