“You can’t stop them – it’s the World Cup”: Jakirović on Semi Ajayi’s Nigeria call-up

By Oluwadamilola Olaleye

Hull City manager Sergej Jakirović has acknowledged the inevitability of releasing Semi Ajayi for international duty, despite the defender’s recent return from injury, citing the significance of Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

Ajayi has been included in the Super Eagles squad for their crucial qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin Republic, even as he continues to build match fitness after a spell on the sidelines.

Speaking ahead of the international break, Jakirović admitted that while the timing isn’t ideal for the club, international obligations of this magnitude take precedence.

“You can’t stop them because next year is the World Cup,” Jakirović said. “Everyone is buzzing when it’s the World Cup. I hope they all will play something—Semi (Ajayi) and Liam (Millar)—and that they will return healthy.”

Ajayi featured in Hull City’s recent fixtures after recovering from injury, and Jakirović hopes the national team appearances will aid his return to full sharpness.

“He needs it,” the manager added. “Liam as well—he’s doing better now, played almost 85 minutes in the last two games. So it’s good.”

Jakirović confirmed that Hull City’s medical staff will continue to monitor Ajayi’s condition closely while he is away and expressed confidence in the player’s ability to manage the step up in intensity.

Nigeria, currently third in their qualifying group, face Lesotho on October 10 in Polokwane, South Africa, before hosting Benin Republic on October 16 in Uyo as they push for a spot at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
