‘You could see fatigue’ – Monday Odigie berates IMC over fixture congestion
By Wale Mustapha
Technical adviser of Bendel Insurance, Monday Odigie has called on the Interim Management Committee to consider the plight of footballers in Nigeria Premier Football League with a review of its fixture arrangements.
Odigie’s appeal is coming on the heels of Wednesday’s 1-0 victory over Nasarawa United and the Benin Arsenals remain still unbeaten after eight games to the campaign thanks to Ebuka Akubundu’s second half strike.
The former international turned tactician admitted that the fixture arrangements is having a telling implications on the quality of matches, calling for flexibility of the match schedule in consideration of  players’ health status.
“Playing two games in the spate of four days is very demanding looking at the strength of these boys but we are happy to get the win,” Odigie told media.
“It was a very difficult game because we struggled from the beginning to the end, you could see fatigue tell on both sides, its only chance we had and lucky we were able to convert it.
“I will appeal to people who run the league in this country to please and consider the strength and wellbeing of these boys as you can see its telling on them now.
“I’m impressed with their performance and I will be indifferent with always thank the boys and thankful to God for it because it was a very difficult game.”
Next for Insurance is another home clash against Enyimba on Sunday and Odigie expects his team to recover on time for the match against a stiffer opponent.
“We will always go back and correct some mistakes from previous games and look forward to next games with positivity irrespective of the opposition,” he continued.
“We are looking forward to a very big match against a stiff opposition, we will do all we can to get ourselves together and be ready for it and we pray for a victory.
“We will take each game as they come, we want to maintain life in top division, if wishes were horses we would want to win it but we would not want to put ourselves under unnecessary pressure but to take a step at a time.”
