Rivers United’s run in the 2023 CAF Confederation Cup came to an end following a 0-0 draw recorded against Young Africans of Tanzania in the second leg of their quarterfinal clash on Sunday.
The goalless draw was not enough to see the Nigerians through after suffering a 2-0 first leg defeat at home a week ago and eventually crashed 2-0 on aggregate.
The Nigerian champions had put themselves in a tight situation after conceding twice at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
Despite high hopes of overturning the deficit, the Pride of Rivers failed to come to the party as the hosts left nothing to chance on their own ground to seal their progression at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
The Port Harcourt based side could only muster four shots at goal against the 12 provided by the Tanzanians.
The Tanzanians even looked the better side with two shots on targets in a match that was disrupted midway through the first half as a result of a 20 minutes light out at the stadium.
The qualification has now made Young Africans the first ever Tanzanian club to reach the semi final of the rebranded CAF organized competition since 1994.
They will be taking on South African side, Marumo Giants in the semifinal of the second tier African club completion.
On the other hand, Rivers will now shift their attention to their NPFL campaign, as they bid to guarantee their Super Six qualification with three games in hand.
