2024 WAFU-B Women’s Champions League: Edo Queens forfiet trio to Falconets

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

As Edo Queens prepare to hit Cote D’Ivoire for the 2024 West Africa Zone B (WAFU-B) Women’s Champions League in August, they will be without the services of three key players for the tournament.

The trio of Folorunsho Comfort, Chioma Olise, and Goodness Osigwe has been invited to the national U-20 team ahead of the 2024 FIFA U-2O Women’s World Cup in Colombia.

The three players played key roles in helping the Benin City-based side clinch their first-ever league title in Yenegoa, Bayelsa state.

The Falconets will face Germany, Venezuela, and the Korean Republic in Group D.

Edo Queens, on the other hand, will face maiden champions of WAFU-B, Hasaacas Ladies of Ghana, Omnisports Etincelle (Burkina Faso), and AS Garde Nationale (Niger Republic) in Group B.

The Executive Chairman Edo State Sports Commission and Olympian, Yussuf Alli directed that the national duty call must be obeyed without delay just as the head coach expressed confidence that his technical crew envisaged and made adequate replacements for the key players.

The Edo State Sports Commission Chairman, in his reaction to this development, said, ” This is one of the reasons our state government invests so much in our football teams: to help develop talents and raise players for our national teams.

“So, getting three call-up letters for our girls is a plus to us as the management and Edo State Government. Yes, the girls are very important in our team for the CAF Champions League in Cote d’Ivoire, but the national assignment comes first. We are happy to receive the cheering news and it should serve as a motivation instead.. I wish our girls success and we wish the falconets
success at the World Cup.”

The competition is scheduled for August 10 to 23 in Yamossoukro and Stadium Banny, Bouake.

The winner of the tournament will qualify for the fourth edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League.
