Blow for Nottingham Forest as Taiwo Awoniyi faces injury setback

By Saheed Afolabi

Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo has disclosed that Taiwo Awoniyi has suffered an injury setback just weeks after resuming preseason activities.

The Nigerian striker was absent during the Forest’s friendly match against Chelsea on Saturday, while his international teammates, Ola Aina and Emmanuel Dennis, featured in the game.

Santo revealed that Awoniyi sustained the injury during training, and the timeline for his full recovery remains uncertain. The Super Eagles forward experienced a calf issue, raising concerns about his participation in the ongoing preseason.

“He (Awoniyi) had a problem in the first training session of the week. Let’s see how long it takes,” Santo was quoted by the Nottingham Post. “It was something in his calf. Unfortunately, he couldn’t play today. Hopefully, he doesn’t miss too much of preseason. For all of them, it (preseason) is important, and more so for Taiwo.”

Awoniyi’s run in the 2023/2024 season was marred by injuries, which ultimately led to his absence from the 2023 AFCON.
