Kenneth Omeruo praises Augustine Eguavoen for restoring confidence in Super Eagles

By Monsurah Olatunji

Nigeria international Kenneth Omeruo has commended former interim head coach Austin Eguavoen for his role in restoring the Super Eagles’ confidence during his brief tenure.

Eguavoen, who is now the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), took over as interim coach following the resignation of Finidi George.

Eguavoen led the Super Eagles through four critical Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, securing Nigeria’s qualification for the 2025 AFCON.

However, after more than seven months without a permanent head coach, the NFF appointed Eric Chelle as the new Super Eagles boss.

Chelle’s immediate challenge is to win all remaining World Cup qualifiers in order to keep Nigeria’s hopes of participating in the tournament alive.

Currently sitting fifth in their group with just three points from four matches, the Super Eagles will face Rwanda on March 17 and Zimbabwe on March 24.

Speaking during a live session on X alongside his teammate Wilfred Ndidi, Omeruo, one of the longest-serving members of the team, expressed his gratitude to Eguavoen for stabilizing the squad during a turbulent period.

“Kudos to Eguavoen for those games (AFCON qualifiers),” Omeruo said. “When he took over, our confidence was low, but he helped us get it back. Now, when we are at our best, no country can stand against the Super Eagles.”

Omeruo’s remarks reflect the impact Eguavoen had in restoring the morale and belief within the Super Eagles, which will be crucial as the team prepares for the challenges ahead under Chelle.
