Emem Essien hopes to make impact with maiden Super Falcons invitation

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

After getting her first ever call up to the Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, Edo Queens’ Emem Essien is hoping to make an impact with the Super Falcons.

She joined teammate, Amarachi Odoma as part of home based players invited by coach Justine Madugu for the friendly match against Cameroon in Abeokuta on Tuesday, June 3.

Asides from making impact, she wished to be part of the nine time squad at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

“It might be my first time which I intend to make an impact in what I came here to do. I have something I need to give out to the team at the WAFCON with the opportunity to give out my best,” She told www.nigeriafootball.ng

League winner with Edo Queens at the end of 2023/24 season, Essien flashback to the previous two seasons with Moses Aduku’s side.

“It was interesting and one of the best season so far which I really appreciate and expected to go back this season but eventually it didn’t come out that way,” She added.

“That was not actually what we prepared for. That’s football. It wasn’t actually not a good season which we expected. The previous season a champion and the next having nothing to show for it.”

The talented player opened up on her role models in football.

“More role model is Lionel Messi. I enjoyed everything about him. Scoring ability, performing ability and everything about him is wonderful. I really wished to be more than him or be like him.

“For the women, my role model is FC Barcelona captain, Alexia Putellas. I really enjoyed her as a woman footballer and role model.” She concluded.
