Anas Yusuf attributes low goal return to tactical changes under new Nasarawa United coach

By Wale Mustapha

Nasarawa United forward Anas Yusuf has explained his reduced goal-scoring output this season in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), attributing it to a change in the team’s tactical approach under new head coach Mbwas Magnut.

Yusuf, who finished as the NPFL’s top scorer last season with 17 goals, has managed just one goal in five appearances so far in the current campaign, starting only twice for the Lafia-based club.

Speaking to Diarioas, the Home-Based Super Eagles striker said he is fully committed to playing in any role assigned to him by the new technical crew, even if it means sacrificing personal goal tallies for the team’s success.

“When he [Coach Magnut] arrived, he told me, ‘I know you prefer playing from the left, but I will also need you in other positions,’ and I said I don’t mind. I’m here to help the team,” Yusuf said.

“We have to respect the coach’s decisions. Even if I come on as a substitute, I’ll give 100%. That’s how I think—if I play 20 minutes, I give my all. That helps my image and, more importantly, the team.”

Yusuf acknowledged that the team is still adapting to a new playing style, which has inevitably influenced his attacking output.

Despite his slow start, the 23-year-old remains optimistic about improving his numbers as the season progresses and has promised to contribute whenever called upon.

“I try to make the most of every minute I play in this shirt,” he added.

Yusuf will be aiming to add to his tally when Nasarawa United host Rangers International at the Lafia City Stadium on Sunday, as the Solid Miners seek to climb the NPFL table under their new manager.
