Super Falcons to Receive WAFCON Rewards in Two Batches – NSC Confirms

Nigeria’s senior women’s national team will receive the rewards promised to them for winning a record 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in two batches, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed.
Although agitations over unpaid bonuses and entitlements nearly reached boiling point last year, the players will still have to wait a bit longer for full settlement of their rewards. However, they are expected to receive their houses and national honours next month.
NSC chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, disclosed this while giving an update on plans to fulfil the promises made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the team, including houses, national awards and cash incentives for players, coaches and backroom staff.
According to Dikko, the first batch of rewards will be handed over when the Super Falcons open camp ahead of a pre-WAFCON build-up tournament scheduled to begin in Côte d’Ivoire on February 27. The second batch, he said, will be delivered before the commencement of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
While the staggered arrangement may trigger mixed reactions among players and officials, Dikko assured that concrete steps are being taken to ensure that all beneficiaries receive what they are owed.
“The women never let us down, and they always watch our back in Nigeria. So, we must do what we have to do for them,” Dikko said.
“We are arranging their houses and national honours. Everything is already available and will be handed over to them when they resume camp.”
However, the NSC boss hinted that the monetary rewards are still a work in progress. Players are expected to receive $100,000 each, while coaches and staff are to get $50,000 each, but Dikko explained that the disbursement process must go through the Federal Ministry of Finance.
“We’ve also been working closely with the Ministry of Finance and everybody in charge to make sure all that we are supposed to do for them will be available before the WAFCON,” he added.
“Definitely, we have to do that as much as possible to help their preparations.”
Dikko did not provide specific dates for the payment of each batch.
The Super Falcons will face Senegal, Ghana and hosts Côte d’Ivoire between February 27 and March 7 in the build-up tournament, as part of preparations for WAFCON 2026, which will take place in Morocco from March 17 to April 3.
All four semi-finalists at the tournament will secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, scheduled to be held in Brazil from June 24 to July 25.
