Nigeria international Ademola Lookman’s effort secured the three points as Atalanta go top of the Italian Serie A log following their 2-1 comeback win over Sassuolo on Saturday.
The fierce battle played in a fully packed Gewiss Stadium was expected to come good for the hosts but met a determined Sassuolo who are having an impressive run to the current campaign.
It was Atalanta who dominated most parts of the opening half with series of scoring chances but it was Sassuolo who took the lead with four minutes to end the first when Greek man, Georgios Kyriakopoulos latched on to a through pass in the box from Luca D’Andrea.
Atalanta made sure both teams head into dugout even with their equalizer that came with the last touch of the half via Brandon Soppy located Mario Pasalic in a vantage position and fed him well to make a simple tap in.
Coach Giampaolo Gasperrini’s side came out smoking in the second half and got what turned out the matchwinner from Lookman after he raced into the box from the restart and finished well with a smart pass from Soppy.
The goal, however boosted the confidence of the hosts as they took charge of the remaining moments of the encounter but couldn’t find the needed initiative to increase the tally.
Lookman would then be subbed off with less than 20 minutes of the game but has got the job done for Atalanta with his third Serie A goal of the season.
Atalanta will enjoy being the league leaders till Sunday when other fixtures in the Matchday 10 would have been decided.
