Former Nigeria international Emmanuel Amuneke has called on the team’s handler Jose Peseiro to form a team with collective responsibility rather than around an individual ahead of the 2023 African Cup of Nations.
Osimhen is arguably the poster boy of Super Eagles as they head to the tournament in Ivory Coast as evident in his performance since he broke into the team after the retirement of Odion Ighalo.
The Napoli forward was the overall top scorer in the 2021 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers having netted 5 and 10 goals respectively.
Coach Peseiro will no doubt have Osimhen as his number point man at the AFCON proper and Victor Boniface as striker partner.
Amuneke, who won the AFCON title with Super Eagles in 1994 believes that over reliance on some exceptional players in the team like Victor Osimhen could lead to the team’s downfall.
“Of course, he is a wonderful and distinguished player, but football is a team game that depends on what the team does as a whole, not one player,” the U17 World Cup winning coach told media.
“There must be harmony and harmony between the players in order to reach the podium, so I wish them success and return to us with the title.”
The Super Eagles will kick start their AFCON campaign against Equatorial Guinea on 14th January in Abidjan.
