AFCON 2023: ‘Nigeria not at it best yet in Cote d’Ivoire’ – Victor Osimhen

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria forward, Victor Osimhen insists the Super Eagles are not at their best form yet at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.

The three-time African champions are unbeaten in the tournament after four games as Jose Peseiro’s men have won three of their four games, against hosts Cote D’Ivoire (1-0), Guinea Bissau (1-0), and Cameroon (2-0).

The only dent in the West African nation’s perfect record was a 1-1 with Equatorial Guinea in their opening game.

Despite the Super Eagles’ invisible Afcon 2023 form, Osimhen, who has scored just a goal and provided two assists in four outings, feels their best performance is yet to come.

“I cannot lie, we haven’t played the best of our football yet,” Osimhen told reporters in Abidjan.

“I think the whole team has this mentality of winning, we want to win. For me, we are more like a family than just players. So for me, it is important to have this mentality of winning.

“I want to give kudos to my defenders. They have been focused since the start of this competition. We also have a good goalkeeper (Stanley Nwabali). We want to keep this momentum going.”

With five goals scored and one conceded, the Super Eagles will face the Southern Africans in the quarter-final of the tournament.
