Alex Iwobi reflects on 2024, hopes Super Eagles qualify for 2026 World Cup

A silver medalist with Nigeria’s senior men’s national team at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire, Alex Iwobi, is looking back at 2024 with pride.

With less than a week to the end of the year, the Fulham forward is making headlines with his Christmas shop ‘Alexpress’ opened to give gifts to families who can’t afford to do Shopping during the Yuletide season.

When he’s not making Christmas come true, Iwobi is a midfielder for the English Premier League (EPL) team, Fulham and Super Eagles.

In 2024, Nigeria reached the Afcon final but lost to Ivory Coast.

“We wanted to win, but you can’t dwell on it; you just have to try and go again,” He told BBC Sports.

“To play in such an occasion and also be second in Africa is something we should be very proud of. The beautiful thing about football is there is always another opportunity around the corner. So, of course, AFCON was done, but I am coming back into my mindset and making sure I am ready for Fulham.”

2025 is filled up with the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers and the AFCON, and Iwobi has some wishes.

“Even with Fulham in the Premier League, you want to win it,” He added.

“It’s been a good 2024; we have qualified for the next AFCON, and hopefully, next is the World Cup. That’s the big dream for everyone. Merry Christmas.” He concluded.
