Arsenal Secures Europa League Progress Despite Iwobi’s Absence

Arsenal successfully secured advancement to the next round of the UEFA Europa League, clinching their spot despite a goalless draw against Red Star Belgrade in Group H at the Emirates on Thursday.

Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi was notably absent from the Arsenal squad for the match, with Chuba Akpom remaining an unused substitute. Arsenal maintains its leading position in the group with 10 points, while Red Star holds the second spot with five points. The group’s other fixture witnessed Cologne triumphing over BATE Borisov 5-2, confirming Arsenal’s progress to the round of 32.

In Group G, Super Eagles invitee Anthony Nwakaeme featured for Hapoel Beer-Sheva but was unable to find the net in their 1-1 away draw against FC FCSB.

Nwakaeme’s club and fellow Super Eagles teammate, John Ogu, spent the entire match on the bench. Florinel Coman opened the scoring for FCSB in the 31st minute, with Ben Sahar equalizing for Hapoel in the 37th minute. Hapoel currently stands third in the group with four points, while FCSB leads with 10 points.

Moving to Group I, Konyaspor, missing Nigerian striker Imoh Ezekiel, secured a 1-1 draw against Salzburg away. Nigerian striker Alhaji Gero played the full match as his club Oestersunds suffered a 1-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao in Spain.

In other results, Viktoria Plzen dominated Lugano with a 4-1 victory, Vitoria de Guimaraes overcame Marseille 1-0 (the latter having Patrice Evra sent off for an altercation with a fan before kickoff), and Hertha Berlin triumphed over Zorya with a 2-0 win.

Additionally, Nice faced a 1-0 loss against Lazio, Vitesse succumbed to a 2-0 defeat against Zulte-Waregem, Real Sociedad emerged victorious with a 3-0 win over FK Vardar Skopje, and Rosenborg settled for a 1-1 draw against Zenit St. Petersburg.
