Awoniyi and Osimhen celebrate first partnership in Nigeria colours

Taiwo Awoniyi and Victor Osimhen celebrated their first partnership together in their last Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on Sunday.

The duo started a game together for the first time in their international careers as the Super Eagles hammered Sao Tome and Principe 6-0 on matchday six of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Prior to the game, Osimhen had started that he could pair with anyone upfront to accommodate more strikers in the lineup instead of monopolizing the role.

Head coach Jose Peseiro granted his wish by starting two strikers in a 4-4-2 formation. Both players accounted for four of the six goals scored, with Osimhen helping himself to a hat-trick to finish the AFCON qualifiers as top scorer.

Awoniyi scored the third goal for the Super Eagles with a volley that went viral on social media. The Nottingham Forest star took to his official social media platforms to celebrate God for his second goal with the Super Eagles.

Osimhen then celebrated the strike partnership in the comments with a “GOD is the greatest” statement.

Awoniyi then responded by celebrating Osimhen’s history-making performance “Plenty Baba”.

Nigeria had ten different scorers in the qualifiers: Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Terem Moffi, Moses Simon, Taiwo Awoniyi, Samuel Chukwueze, Emmanuel Dennis, Oghenekaro Etebo, Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi.
