By Samuel Ahmadu
Nigeria have been handed a boost ahead of the Women’s World Cup following the return of Ashleigh Plumptre from injury in Liecester City 5-0 victory over Sunderland in a Continental Tyres League Cup tie on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old sustained an hamstring injury in Leicester 1-0 defeat to West Ham United on November 20, missing out of action since then before making an exciting first team return on Wednesday.
After almost two-month absense, the Super Falcons central defender returned to the starting lineup against the Lady Black Cats and was in action for 61 minutes before making way for Mackenzie Smith.
The Nigeria star ensured her side keep a rare clean sheet against Sunderland, providing a fantastic cover for goalkeeper Levell in their big Cup triumph at Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground.
With her return to action, Plumptre is likely to be included on Nigeria roaster for February’s camp in a North American nation during the international break as Randy Waldrum’s side continue its Women’s World Cup build up.
Big victory for Leicester came off goals from Missy Goodwin, Sam Tierney, Ava Baker, and Molly Pike brace.
Plumptre’s side return to Women’s Super League action on Sunday, January 15 when they face Brighton & Hove at the King Power Stadium.
