South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns produced a dominant display to thrash Remo Stars 5–1 in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round first leg on Sunday in Abeokuta, Nigeria.

It was a night to forget for the Nigerian representatives, who struggled to cope with the visitors’ pace and precision throughout the encounter.

Thapelo Matthews opened the scoring for the Brazilians in the 12th minute, before Peter Shalulile doubled the advantage three minutes before halftime.

After the restart, Reisinho extended the lead in the 61st minute, while Sales made it 4–0 in the 75th minute.

Samson Olasupo managed to pull one back for Remo Stars two minutes later, giving the home fans something to cheer, but Ntsabeleng restored Sundowns’ four-goal cushion in the 85th minute to seal a resounding away victory.

With this emphatic win, Mamelodi Sundowns take a commanding advantage into the second leg in South Africa, leaving Remo Stars with a mountain to climb if they are to progress to the group stage of the competition.

Meanwhile, another Nigerian representative, Rivers United suffered a 1-0 loss to Black Bulls of Mozambique in the first leg of their second preliminary round.
