CAF CL: Governor Wike promises Rivers United N25m to beat Wydad Casablanca
By Wale Mustapha
It is true with the word that says, money is the vessel for good evangelism.  That’s the style of Rivers State Governor, Barrister Nyesom Wike when he communicated with the players of Rivers United on Friday ahead of the second round first leg of CAF Champions League.
The encounter billed for Adokiye Amiesimeka Stadium in Port Harcourt on Sunday is one of the deciding matches that will see the eventual winner make it to the money spinning group stages.
Governor Wike having knowledge of how daunting the task will be for the boys has encouraged the players and officials of the team with a promise of $40,000 (#25,000,000) if they up their game and make it past the current African champions.
The Governor who was speaking to the players through the Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Barrister Chris Green said that the people of Rivers State and Nigeria are behind the team as they look to give the country creditable representation in Africa’s premiere club competition.
Barrister Green also disclosed that the Governor has approved $20,000 each for players and officials for winning the last Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL.
“The Governor, who is the number one fan of this club, has asked me to inform you all that the people of Rivers State are solidly behind you in this national project,” Barr. Green said as he addressed players, coaches and officials of the club ahead of Sunday’s huge clash.
“I also want to let you know that the Governor has graciously approved the sum of $20,000.00 for each player for winning last season’s Nigeria Professional Football League title.
“The Governor has also announced that if you qualify for the group stages of the Champions League, you will receive $40,000.00 each.
“So go out there and compete with dignity, honour and the traditional Rivers spirit to put smiles on the faces of Rivers people and indeed all Nigerians,” he concluded.
In his response, club captain Festus Austine thanked the governor and Commissioner for the incentive, while assuring that they will strive to justify the confidence reposed in them by the government and the people of Rivers State.
