Champions League: Nigeria striker made history in Monaco’s humbling of Barcelona

In a thrilling UEFA Champions League match on Thursday, Nigerian striker George Ilenikhena stole the spotlight as he came off the bench to score the decisive goal in AS Monaco’s 2-1 victory over Barcelona.

Making his Champions League debut, Ilenikhena not only secured the win for Monaco but also made history as the youngest player to score in the club’s UEFA Champions League history, surpassing the record previously held by Kylian Mbappé.

The match at Stade Louis II marked the start of the new Champions League season. Monaco took an early lead with a goal from Maghnes Akliouche in the 11th minute, capitalizing on Barcelona’s misfortune after Eric Garcia received a red card, leaving the visitors with ten men.

Lamine Yamal equalized for Barcelona just five minutes later, setting the stage for a dramatic encounter. However, in the 71st minute, the 18-year-old Ilenikhena showcased his talent by racing clear and finishing past Marc-André ter Stegen, sealing the victory for the hosts.

Ilenikhena’s performance not only thrilled fans but also highlighted the rising talent within the Nigerian football scene.
