Daniel Akpeyi Urges Super Eagles to Fix Defensive Lapses Ahead of AFCON Knockout Stage

Former Nigeria international Daniel Akpeyi has called on the Super Eagles to tighten up defensively as they prepare for the knockout phase of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Nigeria were among the most entertaining sides in the group stage, scoring eight goals across three matches to finish top of their group with a perfect record. However, despite their attacking brilliance, defensive frailties remain a concern, with the Super Eagles conceding four goals in the group phase —letting in at least one goal in every match.

Speaking on SuperSport, Akpeyi expressed disappointment with the recurring defensive lapses, highlighting the goal conceded in the 3–1 victory over Uganda as a clear example of what needs to be corrected.

“Unfortunately, it is something they need to keep working on,” Akpeyi said. “You can see a player running into the pocket and receiving the ball there. It makes it difficult. Is everyone sleeping at the back?”

The former goalkeeper stressed the importance of awareness and communication in defence, noting that opponents have repeatedly exploited similar spaces behind Nigeria’s backline.

“They have to observe when a player is making a run into that space. This keeps reoccurring every now and then,” he added. “I believe Eric Chelle will go back to the drawing board and see how he can work on this team to make sure we don’t concede goals.”

Nigeria will face Mozambique in the Round of 16, with the Mambas qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams. As the competition enters its decisive phase, Akpeyi believes defensive solidity could be the difference between an early exit and a deep run in the tournament.
