Nigeria prospect Daryl Dike completes West Brom’s comeback with a brilliant header to give the visitors a 2-1 victory over Sunderland.
While Daryl has already scored three goals in eight international caps for the US men’s national team (USMNT), he is still eligible to represent Nigeria and has refused to make a full commitment to any of the two countries.
The Nigerian-American has his brother Bright Dike, sister Courtney Dike and cousin Emmanuel Emenike all represent Nigeria at the international level.
Dike was playing in just his third match of the season after suffering a thigh injury and his coach Corberán is delighted to see the American back in full training and fighting for a place in the starting XI, and but US soccer fans were delighted to see him make his mark this week.
The 22-year-old transferred from Major League Soccer’s Orlando in January, debuted as a second-half sub against Queens Park Rangers on January 15 and sustained a season-ending hamstring injury in his first start, against Peterborough on January 22, and wasted no time in showing why he should be considered going forward.
The Baggies were trailing 1-0 when Dike entered the field on 64 minutes. Within six minutes of his introduction the striker assisted Tom Rogic to tie the game.
Twelve minutes later, the striker scored his team’s second goal at the Stadium of Light – and his first since signing – as they came from behind to earn their fourth successive English Championship win.
Daryl said his winning goal for West Bromwich Albion at Sunderland “means everything”.
“My emotions are through the roof,” he told media. “These past months have been the most difficult time of my life. All I want to do is be on the pitch and support the guys,” he added.
“Finally having this chance, and coming on and making an impact, is great for me mentally. Seeing all the guys back me after the goal meant everything because they know what I’ve been through. It’s a great feeling, for sure.”
Dike dedicated the match winner to club team doctor, Julian Widdowson, who died suddenly at the weekend.
It was a fourth victory in a row for West Brom under Carlos Corberan, and it lifted them back out of the relegation zone and up to 17th spot of the table.
