Deborah Abiodun shines as Spirit edge San Diego Wave in dramatic NWSL Clash

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria international  Deborah Abiodun bagged an assist as Washington Spirit sealed a thrilling 2-1 victory over San Diego Wave in the NWSL on Sunday.

The Super Falcons midfielder provided the opener, setting up Rosemonde Kouassi of Côte d’Ivoire with a precise cross inside the box after a clever cut-back. Kouassi made no mistake, nodding home in the 9th minute to give the Spirit an early lead.

San Diego battled back late in the game, with Delphine Cascarino scoring an equalizer in the 95th minute to level proceedings.

However, just when the match seemed destined for a draw, substitute Sofia Cantore — who had replaced Nigeria’s Gift Monday in the 82nd minute — turned provider for Kouassi, who completed her brace with a composed finish in the 98th minute to secure all three points for the Spirit.

Abiodun played the entire duration of the match and received a yellow card in the 69th minute for a tactical foul.

With the win, Washington Spirit remain in second place on the NWSL standings with 43 points from 23 matches, trailing leaders Kansas City Current by 13 points, though the Current still have a game in hand.

The Spirit will next travel to face North Carolina Courage on October 12, 2024.
